In 1992, in a field near the Bargiestraat in Boezinge, a farmer stumbled upon the entrance to a British underground dugout. This dugout was then excavated by the Diggers, a group of amateur archaeologists led by Patrick Van Wanzeele. The shelter turned out to be a veritable time capsule, and the finds were particularly impressive.
There are not many places with preserved or reconstructed trenches, and this one is based on careful excavation of a site that was threatened with destruction. A part of it has been made accessible to the public. The ground here had remained untouched since the end of the Great War until construction of the industrial park began in the 1990s. It shows us what still lies beneath the surface in the places where these battles were fought 100 years ago. As a stark reminder of the human toll, the remains of more than 200 soldiers were also found during these excavations.
